The heady scent1when earth hugs drops of rain—
A gift but of first spell and gone ere long,
Never repeated soon enough again,
Short and sweet comes alas a pleasant song.
A rare delight, ah walking by the field
Of bluebells in April that welcome spring
In blossom, casting brief spell and soon killed;
So short be the cherry blossom's inning,
So fragile be her bloom, so delicate,
Oft light spring-rain can cause petals to fall;
Alas, good things are good for a brief date,
Take life's transience, honeymoon's brief call.
Yea, all things lovely in life short-lived are,
No wonder, beauty nor youth stretches far.

1. Greeks called it ‘stony fluid flowing from veins of gods'. But the fragrance of first rains has science behind it. Certain plants exude oil which is absorbed by soil in dry season. This is released into air along with a bacterial by-product with first rains, as a subtle heady smell.

This is really a beautiful poem on rain.and life having insightful inscription on a philosophical base. The fragrance of first rains has been astutely portrayed in first stanza like.....The heady scent1when earth hugs drops of rain— A gift but of first spell and gone ere long, Thank you dear Pathak sir for sharing this gem here.
each day. The human habit of being quickest " fed up" with things, is mere. but do our best to care for so that we can enjoy longer the lovely things. But I like your Sonnet very much. Brilliantly created.
Perhaps a line or two are missing here... Also I don't think I quite understand when you say, 'They will last long, IF YOU add refreshments (Report) ' Perhaps, as a person grows old, he tends to be dull witted.
Excellent Sonnet, beautifully conveyed. I cite a few lines here, dear poet: Alas, good things are good for a brief date, Take life's transience, honeymoon's brief call. Yea, all things lovely in life short-lived are, .............I don´t agree. They will last long, IF YOU add refreshments
To tell you the truth, this poem was there on PH for long with a different caption, revised it a bit and lo, there are these comments. I can't understand this. Any way, thanks for liking it.

I would like to translate this poem
Alas, good things are good for a brief date, Take life's transience, honeymoon's brief call...........! You are quite right! The aroma of the first rain won't last long.... and all the examples you cited are quite apt to illustrate the transitoriness of life. Meaningful and profound!
Thanks for such good words
