Those Letters

Rating: 4.4

Last night I slept and sometimes wept.
Should not have kept those letters.

I tossed and turned. I should have learned
and should have burned those letters.

I'm still awake. My heart would break
should someone take those letters.

Now here's my ploy: I will destroy,
no more enjoy those letters.

But with the dawn I can't go on.
They are all gone, those letters!

We don't even know who the judges are until after the contest, and they are usually from out of state, so it would be very hard to bribe them. Sorry about the letters you got rid of. It really does cut into your writing ability!

Yes, we treasure some such keepsakes, but the sight of which can often leave a trail of sorrow behind! Though we want to destroy them, we can't! There is a beautiful flow and rhythm to this poem! Really enjoyed reading it! This write deserves Honorable Mention!

Thank you. I wrote that poem almost two years ago, but never posted it on Poem Hunter before, because I was saving it for a contest, and most contests only accept unpublished poems. Then I forgot about it when the 2016 contest came around and had to wait for the 2017 contest.

Thanks, Dee. I don't know anything about a walk down memory lane. This poem is not based on real life, just my imagination.
