Three Stirkes! Your Out! Poem by Kewayne Wadley

Three Stirkes! Your Out!

Her eyes made me think of the horizon just before the sun sets.
They were a dark brown just before the light gave them a brighter shade.
They were vast, if by chance I could find my way inside them.
I'd live there. Not too much gave me comfort. But just one look at them.
And all that burdened my mind seemed to just vanish.
I found myself doing the craziest things just to get her to glance my way.
Especially if we were in a store, and no one seemed to be paying attention.
I'd go over to the toy isle and grab one of those foam swords and pretend I was a pirate.
Making obscene gestures, poking her with the tip of it going 'Arrrrrg, now show me the plunder of the booty! Else ye' walk the plank! '
We'd burst into an uncontrollable laughter after that.
I know I irritated the hell out of that woman.
Leaving her on the row by herself then yelling out shoplifter just as I got to the end, a red face and a hard hit in the shoulder normally followed.
Sometimes in the midst of a serious conversation I'd get real quiet and just stare back into that soft gaze that she'd give. It was always one of those looks that no matter what happens, everything was going to be okay looks.
It wasn't intentional, but when she spoke she had all of my attention so much.
I just became speechless.
Until one day. Naturally, everything was not okay.
I wouldn't blame it on plate tectonics or anything like that.
But that once comforting look, sought comfort else where.
