To The Mume Blossom
What's in a name? We sometimes fall in love
Because of a name, a frequently-praised name.

Mume blossom, blind is my love for you, which stems
from my reading about your frequently-quoted name,
ere your trees were seen in glorious winter bloom,
from songs, odes and poems, the established gems.
I guess you used to be a fairy, mercilessly banished
from heaven sublime, for some minor fault,
and flying being an experience forgotten of the past,
your wings had been hidden away and then vanished.
You choose to bloom when other flowers hibernate
with small petals, white, pink, yellow and red
when winter is grey and people seem desperate.
Braving the tyranny of cold, with your heart of gold,
you have perfect timing, maiden celestial, - therefore
people sing praise: A flower in need is a friend indeed.
