Treading Water Poem by Heart of Ice Die Die Die

Treading Water

I'm healing.
I can finally hold my head high
over those icy waves
that used to pull me under.
I might not be
all smiles and laughs.
But when I do,
they're real now.
I'm not hiding completely
behind a broken mask
full of lies
and invisible tears.
I can give someone a hug
and not hold on for dear life
because I'm afraid
of what will happen
when I let go.
I'm not dangling
over that cliff anymore.
I'm not miles and miles away
looking over my shoulder at the fading sun.
But I can be proud of the ground
that I stand upon.
I can look up at the moon
late at night
and smile
instead of crying my sorrows
to that shining moon up in the sky.
I'm starting to swim
for myself now.
Those long weeds
aren't wrapping their dastardly hands
around my white ankles anymore.
I'm treading water
and keeping my head up.
I won't go under again.
