When The Circus Came To Town Poem by Paula Glynn

When The Circus Came To Town

When the circus came to town in 1920
The seats were full and bustling with plenty
The audience waiting impatiently in trepidation
For the exciting and unique circus show to begin
Theatrical performances to create mindblowing magic.

First the knife thrower blindfolded with black silk
Hearing the gasps of nerves from the crowd
The intermediate time hearing her scream loud
Wondering if the knife thrower will be accurate
Knowing though it is all part of the magic show.

The tiger tamer controlling and commanding
His ring that contains eight wild and clever tigers
Tigers that frighteningly roar and demand raw meat
The audience glued to the edge of their seat
Wondering if the brave tiger tamer will become meat.

Other animals to showcase the dedicated animal training
The circus staff cleaning up afterwards without complaining
Strutting along the circus ring virtually explaining
The wonder of the elephants, dogs and other animals
Their intelligence and integrity alongside their charisma.

The circus clown with his face painted chalk white
His round cheeks painted pink where he pretends not to think
His mouth painted red where he is silent and picks a fake fight
Acting humorously for the audience to clap with laughter
Knowing the enjoyment to reach the end long after.

The tightrope walker dressed in a blue leotard does amaze
The audience's anxious reaction ablaze
Will she fall? Or will she manage to give it her all?
Yet she walks up high and on ropes does fly
The tightrope walker in blue sequins not afraid to dress up in style.

The part of the show where the audience takes control
The spokesman to meet and greet the children
Playing fun games and asking their first names
For when the circus came to town in the summer
Everyone wanted to be entertained and have fun.
