Whispers From The Corner Of The Room Poem by Paula Glynn

Whispers From The Corner Of The Room

The room is pitch black
No light from the moon
The day in the prison done
Dreaded tomorrow morning waiting
To follow the same dull chores
Principles and approach
Needing to assume a fake identity

And he lays in his isolated prison cell
His bed as hard as hell
Because his life is far from swell
His once sweet tooth
Now as bitter as hell
Smoking those lung cancer cigarettes instead
For he cries every night in his prison bed

But one night in the darkness
He hears a whisper
'Are you alone? '
Surprised 'Yes, who are you? '
'I'm above you, in the corner of the room.'
And sure enough a spider appears
Seemingly seeing him in the darkness

And a beautiful spider too:
With a blue and white striped body
Supernatural green eyes glowing wonder
Being able to see in the dark
And jump vast distances
And weave a clothes makers web
Skill and expertise incredible

Spider and the lonely prisoner
To become good friends
Talking about world issues for hours
And days in the torturous prison
The spider even letting him
Hold him in awe and amazement
Admiring his acrobatic body

After many miserable months
The prisoner to be released
But never forgetting that magical spider:
A talking spider that helped him cope
And opened up his closed mind
The colourful and vast world now the place
The once prisoner deciding to explore.
