Why I Write Poetry Poem by Otha Gwabe

Writing poetry helps find the voice for my thoughts I can't say
Helps express all the feelings I don't allow myself to embrace
Most of them are dark, I'll admit
But it shows my true emotion when I'm writing it
Many write about love
Others, exciting experiences
Most, about their imaginations coming to life
But for me, with poetry,
I feel I write about the things people tend to look over
I feel I write about the truth no one wants to hear
I feel I write for the people who can't speak their mind
But maybe I'm just delusional, I don't know
I just write how the story goes
Writing poetry helps the weight of emotions off my shoulders
The ones I know I shouldn't keep bottled up
For I have not many to talk to about them
So I tend to keep my mouth shut
Even if I talk, there is only so much I can say
I feel if I say too much, they'll turn against me
Oh but when I write, and I know this might sound odd
For my mind goes blank and everything is in the fingers
All the emotions, rhythm and rhyme
Everything in my poems are all in the fingers.
But it does take a bit of time
My poetry may not be the best out there, but I try
It makes me calm, happier and makes me feel like me
It's like having a therapist to talk about everything
Everything that's hard for me to let go
Everything that continues to shatter me inside
So I use it to soothe the pain
Maybe one day I'll write a lighter, happier poem
But for now I have a lot of dark things to get off my chest
Maybe one day I'll see the growth within myself
And the day I write my first happy poem,
I'll know I've finally healed
Yeah, this is the reason
This is why I write poetry
