Working For Very Little Poem by RoseAnn V. Shawiak

Working For Very Little

Cities awakened with the hustle and bustle of people getting
ready and going to work, roads and freeways clogged with
traffic, barely moving forward some mornings.

Everyone conscientious and responsible, going to work so they
can get a pay check to help feed and take care of their families,
even though the money isn't very much to live on.

Existing because of our corrupt politicians, always taking from
us in one way or another, thinking they are entitled to our hard-
earned money through their greedy minds.

Your poem celebrates common people with no false fanfare just simple words telling the truth of things. I agree with about corrupt politicians. But you have to add to the offensive against injustice the oligarchs who pay no taxes and reap the benefits of a top heavy economic system. When a CEO earns 700 times more money than a worker and can also take a huge bonus, we have a patently unjust system. // Your opening stanza is a vivid picture of the stress and clutter of modern life, and my response is to sing the old gospel song, TAKE ME TO THE RIVER, PUSH ME IN THE WATER... because we need a lot of spiritual strength to live in modern society.

As a public school teacher, I used to work for very little, compared to what people with similar education in other fields made, but I loved my work and my students so I kept at it for forty years. Now I am retired and have more money than I've ever had.
