Would God Ever Grant Me A Lottery Win? Poem by D.N. Rebb

Would God Ever Grant Me A Lottery Win?

Rating: 5.0

Strong alcohol, hazardous nicotine
Hard drugs, excessive caffeine
An unreasonable sexual appetite awaits
Rational addictions to accommodate
Gluttony, one of the seven deadly sins
(Envy, greed, lust, pride, sloth and wrath are the other things)
Gambling, the lowest aim on the obsession chart
Most of us, no extra money with which to part
Poker, blackjack, drinks are on the house
Strategically lose a few hundred bucks, or thereabout
All in the glorious name to poorly entertain
Though just imagine an actual winning gain
For the less venturesome, lotteries are unleashed
Were you informed of your inner gambling beast?
Oh, I know you can dominate the circumstance
After all, it's just a mere game of chance
How much did you spend the previous week?
A practiced liar unknowingly self-deceits
Check those random numbers, one by one
How much have you recently won?
A free replay, you don't say
‘Morrow's forecast now less gray
Put twenty bucks less in the tank today
For the multimillion dollar jackpot you'll want to play
Desperate attempts to relinquish this hope
Uncharted withdrawals, unable to cope
Maybe just one more four dollar scratch ticket
A twenty bucks winner, that's the spirit!
Pretty cashier, give me five more
Please, one be an answer to my prayer
Asking with a presumptuous cold turkey grin
Would God ever grant me a lottery win?

COMMENTS OF THE POEM
Jim McGill 25 February 2023

Gambling allows people to believe that they can get something for nothing. There is always a cost attached to everything. Understanding this might be the first step in treating the addiction.
