You'Re Myself - Poem by lidia vianu

When I’m happy I dream ahead
when I’m downhearted I dream back
I dream of what you wrote
all your words fill my mind
but what’s really true
you want to know
what is and was between us
never together
haunted by that failed stretch of time
what can we first imagine
I know
I didn’t make you remain
but if you hadn’t left so soon
what else would you have liked to hear or say
hinged open like a shell
on the shore
covered by fine sand
lost in pearl-dreams under the shade of palm trees
this belated dream of never-to-be
three o’clock in the morning
you’re there and I know
you think ahead you dream back
rains of seconds swollen with anticipation
the longing inside us
and – you’re myself – in vain the question
we are aren’t we two yet again
