Your Friend Poem by Susan Williams

Your Friend

Rating: 4.8

.
Your friend belittled your topic
Your friend belittled your style
Your friend belittled your lack of rhyme
Your friend belittled your metaphor.
.
Your friend asked you how much you made writing poetry
And when you explained the nature of anthologies
and how they often don't pay anything at all,
Your friend laughed and said
"Oh, you must not be very good at it
if they won't pay you at all."
.
First off, I think your friend
has an incomplete grasp on the nature of poetry.
May I submit that poetry has many ways
to delve into the myriad emotions of the heart,
to explore the layers of spirituality of the soul,
and to entertain the contrary thoughts of the mind.
.
It can be humorous or serious,
playful or sober-sided,
beautiful and smooth,
or ugly and rough.
Sometimes they rhyme, sometimes not,
sometimes they metaphor, sometimes not.
.
I do have one question though
why do you call her friend?
.

Kim- - - I totally agree! " Friends" do not make belittle their friends, do not make them less than they are, do not give them bad memories. Constructive criticism must be gentle and brief in number- or praise or point out the good things in their poems which does so much more to growing a person to express himself better. You have done that.

Varsha- - Your critiques are always illuminating and guiding gently to better writing habits- but we have trolls on this site who are not interested in people expressing themselves in poetry and learning how to do so better and better, but post snide unkind and unhelpful remarks to make themselves look more informed. I like to see poets encouraging fledgling poets, not demeaning them. In other words, more you and less them!

Soran- -Some people just aren't friend material and some people get behind anonymity and are brutal to young writers. These are people I call trolls- -they try to look better by making others look worse. I totally believe that everyone would benefit their lives by writing poetry or short stories or a novel or a journal. Writing is good for the soul!

Cowboy! ! ! Feel free to read my poetry over and over and over again! They thrive on attention, the egotistical little things! !

With friends like that, who needs enemies? I have read and commented on this before, but it is certainly worthy of being read again!

Soran, I wish I knew so much more about the different kinds of poetry, I envy those who can write a historical essay but make a poem of it! That is the cool thing about writing- -the variety of good expression.
