A Broken Child

I remember the shouting
And screaming and
Banging of doors,
Huddled in a corner
Forgotten, unloved,
Out of mind,
Bent over
An unseen book,
Trying to be …
Not there.

Forced in my ears
The breaking of lives,
Afraid of the angry
Lashing of voices,
Feeling the despair
Around me,
Slowly hot tears
Brim my burning eyes
And dropp with a small sound
On the misted page.

Desolation gripped my
Heart and the
Child shrivelled; then
From the ashes of my
Ten years, the phoenix of me
Was born.
