With The Winter Cattle

Only the rattle of a restless chain
And the scrape of an indolent hoof
Disturb the gloom where the beasts remain
Beneath the beams of that ancient roof.

Shrouded in shadows he sits and dreams
Far from the worries of home and school
Moments of blessed removal, it seems,
From the dark-clad masters’ bitter rule.

The twice-daily hiss in the milking pail
The rhythms that roll round each peaceful day
The steaming of breath and the flick of a tail
And the animals whiling their winter away.
