A Brief History Poem by LeeAnn Azzopardi

A Brief History

Rating: 5.0

Captured like wild animals
They forced to board ships to the New World
Then fought for the British whom promised them land
On the island of Nova Scotia
But they weren't free to be
Then some cast back to Liberia
Not knowing what was in store
The American Forefathers kept them locked and chained
Writing about how all men are equal in the eyes of G-d
And then "Separate but Equal"
A Jim Crow law that would lasted another hundred years
With the deaths of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X
As the years progressed
An African-American President was elected
A man who gave us hope, but it didn't last
Now, America is on fire once more
With the blood of George Floyd, Eric Gardener and others
Inciting on an existing inferno
Dear Mr. Trump, no one practicing the first amendment is a thug
So shut up that big trap
And resign you Chicken Little
Amen

This is true history...an amazing verse, LeeAnn. I sense the irony in " Dear Mr. Trump" . There may be a great work in those words....

Great indictment of the whole rotten system! , with over 600 years the progress has been slow and intermittent. There are still people who cannot see that the system is corrupt or that it still castigates entire groups of people. A powerful tome, but for me Trump is the symptom not that cause, the cause are the people who vote for him.

Lots of solid facts there. " Dear Mr. Trump, " may be too kind.

An excellent well thought out poem on the plague of racism. With all due respect, Lee Ann, the last 3 lines seem to be out of character with the rest of the poem. Although I'm in total agreement with you, I respectfully suggest that you revise those emotionally charged lines. I believe that that will make the poem even better than it already is. Just a thought.
