A Heart Full Of Sparrows Poem by Susan Williams

A Heart Full Of Sparrows

Rating: 5.0

.
I have a heart full of sparrows
hopscotching in my evergreen
they chirp and they twitter and
boy do they dither-
they give magic to my every day.
.
I sit beside my picture window
and watch them go shopping
for twigs and leaves and grass
and carry them back all day long
one beak at a time.
.
Some days though
bring excitement drama and suspense
when the black-hearted crows
attack their nests
hidden in the depths of my evergreen tree.
.
The sparrows explode out of its green depths
and give angry deadly chase
darting and dive-bombing
swooping and screeching
lethal threats
.
And I come a-running
broom in hand
to scare those crows away
but my sparrows have sent them packing,
....those wee little gangbangers on wings.

Susan, you have to know already how much i love this! ! ! Your heart full of sparrows - has given my day an added wing of sheer joy. As a fellow bird watcher - i have experienced just how strong the tiny birds are! My dove, Angel, dive bombs the grackles(black birds) the blue jays, and even some other fully grown doves when she is eating the seed we put out for her. She knows it is hers and boy for a barely month old dove - she is quite the little fighter. Isn't nature grand? God has given all of this to us for free. Yet, so many miss it, completely. Love, love, love your mind, heart and soul-as you see much beauty wherever you go. You are such a wonderful change to this site...a most gifted change. i will say it one more time - you're a Poet's Poet. You share your words of warmth, of beauty, of nature, of life....no politics, or mathematics involved- just pure exceptional poetry, art it's very best. Will be sharing more birds, horses, and whatever else i can find, later on. Hope to see you there dear one. Oh, this IS a ten! ! ! ! ! ! !

Theo, I have enjoyed your posts about your dove, Angel, about caring for her till she was old enough to be released, about the morning you and your husband released her and how it was a moment of sublime happiness and sorrow. It's just my opinion, but I think the greatest writers do enjoy the natural world, invest themselves into it, empathize with it, protect it, nurture it. The best writers put no boundaries around what they write about- they can write the most heart-rendering poems about soldiers in war or the plight of refugees or the heart of a murderer and can turn around one day and write about their darling pet kitty kitty. I have been enjoying writing lately about the small free pleasures of life- God has blessed us with everything from a lowly worm or to a magnificent horse or elephant or whale or eagle to write about, to find power and wisdom in. Oh, I don't have to explain it to you, Theo, you know these things and have known them probably since you were born. I cannot thank you enough for the kindest encouragement and support a writer could get from another writer. God bless you and keep you, you warm-hearted poetess you!

If the sparrows were unable to muster the proper defense than certainly the blackbirds will turn the crows wings in retreat. I have seen them cross entire fields to attack the crow. A wise survival technique as the crow never gets a hint as to which tree held the egg filled nests. You immerse the reader into the world of the busy sparrow, energetic and determined. You feel as I do that to be human is to be part of nature and therefor fair to take broom in hand and do our part in helping these creatures that bring such joy.........good for you. This poem is nothing short of delightful.

Oh, thank you, Edmund, for calling this poem delightful. It's how those sparrows make me feel- delighted to be alive and immersed in the present. There's a lot going on outside these windows and other windows I have lived behind. I have been blessed to live life outdoors as well as indoors. Yes, I wish the sparrows would be more sneaky as to where their nests are- -year after year they use the evergreen tree and the crows watch them from the telephone wires busily build their nests, flying in and out of that tree a hundred times a day. They might as well erect a neon sign saying chicks this way- - ] Then when the baby birds hatch they squawk for food and the crows hear and know they have been born and the attacks begin. I often wonder if any baby birds made it through those early days. I have only twice seen young ones take their first flight. I am pleased to meet you, fellow observer of the world around us. I loved reading your observations about the blackbirds and their peremptory flights.

I love sparrows. They remind me of kids in the playground. an even more so when a large Wood pidgeon flutters down and ponderously walks among them, looking for all the world like an elderly benign schoolmaster with wings tucked behind him. The sparrows pay him no heed. The best I saw is when I accidentally sowed some wheat near the garage and when the ears were ripe they came en masse in great excitement. They also splash around in the pond. Yes just like school kids. We have the odd sparrow-hawk but when I see it perched on a chimney pot I warn off the sparrows i I can. It's a lovely poem. well worth waiting for. Straight 10.

I really Thank you, Soran, for pointing out the lines that reached out to touch you- this is helpful to me. At first glance one could be deceived into thinking that the world of birds is a charming Walt Disney movie of charming tweets and twitters! ! !

Frankly, this poem is full of connotations, this poem here sheds the light on the wrestle of life, between the strong evil and the good weak (as it has been symbolised) , but the position of our lovely merciful poet is always stay beside the oppressed one, we are proud of you Susan, be happy, you are so good..congratulation
