A Political Landscape Poem by Gayathri Seetharam

A Political Landscape

A Political Landscape
-Gayathri B. Seetharam
Inspired by Mike Leigh's cinema, Mr. Turner,
I feel compelled to paint political landscapes of Canada, India and USA
Where the sun is rising upwards
And not coming down
For if one "means a sunrise
The other means a sunset"
Although for many countries, a rise in per capita income
Means being set in their ways;

But one wonders about the imagery in present day USA
Which, like Canada and to a certain extent, India,
Is used to being complimented on how beautiful a country it is
And surely enough, I can imagine USA blushing and saying:
"It is too kind of you, my lady";

Painting a political landscape for the USA on Dec 25th,2018
I see either a dry, arid patch or a bleak, desolate stretch
For as far as my research goes from looking at constitutionus.com and National Archives
And I am willing to grant that it is a misprint
The USA does not grant equality to all its citizens anymore
For I saw proof of the Preamble stating liberty and justice to all
And there is no leading clause granting equality to all;

Does this imply that racial inequality is going to be tolerated
Or that the President of the USA can get away with murder
Murder of a democracy which is technically a government of the people, by the people and for the people
And people power, despite not winning elections,
Means that the USA sings a "song of freedom".

A poem with a great message to politicians of USA. Racial inequality is still there in USA despite being a world power. Thanks for sharing.
