A Song From The Paddy Field Poem by Indira Renganathan

A Song From The Paddy Field

Rating: 5.0

And that song when hit my heart
Fragrant from the paddy green
Feasted my mind sat to muse
Masticating some past cud

A small girl

In full skirt and a loose blouse
With long locks double-plaited
Holding tight her grandpa's hand
Walking along the furrows

She sang to the waving green
As the wind whizzed, grand pa laughed
Grandpa had a tuft let loose
To dance free wind-way, she laughed

Her ta-ra-la-la went long
Far to reach a mango grove
She had mangoes raw and ripe
Sang 'bite a bit, bit by bit'

Grandpa couldn't sing fast her speed
She kept laughing way back home
The paddy field bade good bye
Set right its reel, mind swirled back

'Where's grandpa' heart asked.Mind smiled

Dear madam, you have so hauntingly and touchingly inscribed the memories of childhood through a paddy field. Some of he lines are more impressive. Let it be quoted...... .......................Grandpa couldn't sing fast her speed She kept laughing way back home The paddy fieldbade good bye Set right its reel, mind swirled back Beautiful poem.10

As a child I too enjoyed the songs of rural women weeding in the paddy fields.....! But paddy fields are fast disappearing and no women folk to be seen in weeding or harvesting! Your childhood memories are nostalgically presented in a beautiful way! Thanks for sharing!

A very touching memory. So heartwarming that my heart melts for this memory you shared, Indira. This elegantly crafted write made me remember my grandfather whom I have great memories with. Happy are we who had experienced life with our grandfathers. A privilege that others were deprived of.
