A Warrior's Poem - From Inner Mongolia Poem by Daniel Brick

A Warrior's Poem - From Inner Mongolia

Rating: 5.0

In summer flowers cover the grasslands,
and home thoughts are deep in my heart.
But I have a mission to fulfill for my Khan
and our people. May the Sky God protect our tribe,
as he protects the flowers blooming with life.

When snows come and cover the grasslands
like a shroud, the flowers die, as they are
born to. I will kneel in prayer for my Khan
and for our people. My journey completed,
my soul at peace, I will lie beneath the grass.

And above me, new flowers will sway in the grasslands.

In the same way, death will be inevitable for all. He doesn't mind dying, once he has fulfilled his duties. Then he will lie content in his grave which will eventually be covered with grass where new flowers will once again bloom. Thus the cycle of life will repeat itself.....! Great thoughts generated on looking at Nature.

A warrior never lives for himself, but for a cause. Here the self assigned mission of the warrior is to pray to bless the land with rain and a favorable climate. He sees the flowers covering the grasslands. Once the snow and fog come, the flowers will die.

You have put yourself into a warrior's shoes and probed his feelings so beautifully. To see the world through different lenses can give us a new perspective on life. A great read. Nature imagery is in tune with the mood of the narrator. This poem takes us back in time, yet it is so contemporary. It has a universality, a timelessness.

Thanks much Nosheen. I'm glad you found both the archaic and the modern in this poem. I was so moved by that line " Home thoughts are deep in my heart." I lost my beloved aunt Rosie last October: Her face is deep in my heart.
