a mother and her kid watch
their trailer home swallowed
by rising river water; helpless
they hug each other in tears
hoping it won't be wash away
everything they own is there
walking barefoot to safe center
bowl of soup, warm blankets
is not enough to heal wounds
why does nature so cruel to us
whispers in darkness of night
let's not forget, we are on her way
