Sharp as Gilda's aria,
Caro nome and the pause
Before the crescendo of applause
Saluting Rigoletto,
I remember
The blush, brief rose,
And the sweet scent of lavender
As I returned her fallen programme
And her lips part with a gentle "grazie"
I remember too her blue stilettos
In the House lights' pallid glow
But I never asked her name,
That evening in Milan.
Tom this reads beautifully, the feeling of love and warmth that comes from reading it, is lovely. Annette
A very romantic moment in time- I'm glad you shared it... those blue stilettos deserve lasting fame in the hearts of more than one man!
I'm a sucker for blue. When my wife trawled me through her Fashion Catalogues and asked me to mark the ones I liked, they all turned out to be blue, irrespective of style! So I had to go back and check out the non-blues. No, I didn't shoot off to the Lingerie pages, honest! Luckily she'd put little marks against the ones she liked, so I'd cry out.. Oh that would look fantastic on you, Isa! Sometimes I might have fooled her, only sometimes! Her favourite colour was red but she liked blue too. But in her cartoons the men all wore red stilettos. Not sure about the women!

It was a magic sequence of moments. Callas, playing Gilda, had just finished her aria, Caro nome, dearest name, about her lover. then there was a pause just before the wild applause in response to that wonderful voice. There was irony in the fact I never asked the Lady her name as the song was about Gilda's lover's name. Some things you never forget, do you?
