And Too Late Now.. Poem by Lodigiana Poetess

And Too Late Now..

Rating: 5.0

The sky blue pink of day slowly devoured by twilight
reducing everything it touched to diluted sepia.
The vibrant green of the distant hills stolen and replaced with
sombre grey.
Alone he stood watching silently,
his weathered hand slowly smoothing his thining hair.
He thought with pain, of the times she would weave her slender fingers
through his untameable mane
and she smiled at his inscrutable face.
Regret overwhelmed him as he knew he should have returned her smile,
joined her in the joy of love expressed, but that was then....
and too late now.
As the sun sank into oblivion, kissing the sky farewell until morning,
he touched his lips, now cold, cracked and unused
and prayed to feel the warmth of her mouth
as she so often planted a sweet, fragrant kiss on his cheek.
So simple, so caring, so constant
A lifetime of loving shared, yet few words spoken.
He hoped that love would be recognised without great
displays of emotion,
yet, whilst he knew her unwavering devotion,
he felt now,
at this final moment,
that his words should have been clearer,
warmer,
honeyed.
As he held the cold, steely urn which was all that remained of his
darling girl,
he felt a tear, slowly meander down his face
and he knew his heart was irrevocably broken
and that no words
could bring her home.
Words left sadly, mute and unspoken
...and too late now

You've done a superb job capturing the emotions of regret! As I read the line " He hoped that love would be recognised without great displays of emotion" , I think about how we show love in different ways but not always ways that others want to receive it. A very relatable poem. 10

Showing love should be so easy and yet so many of us find it difficult or even unecessary...I hope that maybe anyone reading this might remember how important it is to show those we love that we DO love them..before it's too late. I am so pleased they you enjoyed it and appreciate you taking the time to comment so generously. Lodigiana xx

We all have regrets for words unsaid, responses to warmth not given. You have captured this sense beautifully in a very fine poem. Tom Billsborough

Thank you so much Tom. Words are such simple yet powerful tools that we each have access to, and can repair or break spirits and hearts so easily. Hopefully life will teach us how to be skilled workmen and use them well.Much appreciate you reading and commenting xx

Thank you so much for your lovely comments..Sometimes we forget that an outward show of our emotions is needed and valued..especially when it is to let our loved ones know how dear and precious they are to us..we should never be afraid to show that we care..xx
