Being Buddha Poem by Bharati Nayak

Being Buddha

Rating: 3.7

Oh Lord Buddha!
How did you rise
From being a mere mortal
To be the Lord?
Neither the wealth nor the crown,
Could bind you in worldly affairs
You left your beloved son Rahul
And beautiful wife Yasodhara
In a deep dark night
In search of enlightenment.
You searched and searched
For that knowledge
That would free mankind
From sufferings, pain and disease.
And lead them to a state
Where there would be no birth, no death.
Your quest for a solution
Made you an ascetic
Doing harsh penance for years
And ultimately you found Enlightenment
Under Bodhi Druma (Banyan Tree) in Gaya
And came to be known as ‘Buddha"
You taught ‘Eightfold Path'
For the people to follow
That would heal body and mind
And attain calmness.
And the mind will be enlightened
With noble thoughts.
By following you,
The Emperor Ashok
Could find a changed heart
He turned into a benevolent king
From a bloodthirsty warrior.
You were precursor of Peace and Non-violence
Is it not a mockery of the great name
When India, the country in which you attained enlightenment
Named her first atomic explosion at Pokhran
As ‘Smiling Buddha "

COMMENTS OF THE POEM

All you wrote about Buddha is relevant to his sacrifice of all worldly belongings for attaining enlightenment. It is possible only for human born Gods
