Bleep This

Rating: 5.0

'Your poem has been deactivated'
Is that right? And why so?
'Profanity'
Well that's a little strange
This site requires a minimum age of 14
Find me a 14 year old who doesn't encounter profanity every day and I'll call you a liar
These words are not a mystery to people
They can be found in the dictionary
Profanity is part of culture
It serves a very certain purpose in our vocabulary
Effectively I 'bleeped' it out with random punctuation anyway
! @*#%$?
Was that offensive?
....
In the piece of mine that management deactivated
A man kills another man in cold blood
With his bare hands
It was brutal and barbaric and dehumanizing
By design
....
That's fully acceptable
But god forbid we use a four letter word to add realness to the situation
....
Rubbish

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This comes literally two days after I read this piece from a well renowned news agency. http: //www.bbc.com/future/story/20160303-the-surprising-benefits-of-swearing

I tried (one by one) using these topics to describe this poem in the required field
Censorship
Profanity
Priorities
None of these are recognized. I settled for the topic listed which is, in my opinion, not nearly as accurate as any of the three rejected proposals
COMMENTS OF THE POEM

Gentlemen. I am the dissenting fool that insists there is no room for street talk in my home. If I run into offensive language in a written work I find it unreadable and will not condone it. We all have that choice. I am of a venerable age and feel that you may very well be of my opinion after hearing the same dreary repetition year after year after year. It is called decency and good manners. (I worked on a tugboat)

Trust me you are not the only one who is F@#king annoyed with this.. They deactivated a number of my poems.. I had often compromised but four of my poems are still 'deactivated' because 'profanity'.. Btw, I guess you used the word 'a-h*le' in that poem, which got it deactivated.. I thought about telling you that... It's just plain stupid when you think that how ridiculous it is to think that there are people who will be offended with a F-word than other things thrown in around here... This is a poetry site, agreed, but more importantly this is a community for poets, and if poets are to be that sensitive towards a F-word or something they better stop writing altogether... Censorship is sheer stupidity.. P: S: Can you guys please censor the Trump guy? ? He is all over my fb newsfeed and even in the newspapers I subscribe.. Today they ran an editorial on him, and I somehow ended up reading Drumph answering what is '2 2' in the George Takei page at FB.. Jeebus Mike, that one man is doing more damage to the image of America around the world than Bush did as a president! !

Not sure that I can reign in drumpf for you Souren. He has an entire army of media to catch his every moronic moment. Most of the news I read is from international sources, it seems your right about the damage he's doing to the image of America... And all of this with none of the powers given to a commander in chief. Frightening to know how easily a true weasel and snake can ascend into political prominence. As to the poem, When I speak to my nieces and nephews, I don't swear. When I address a stranger or consider myself within their earshot, I mind my language so as not to appear brash or inconsiderate. I don't call any person a name, swear word or not, if it might be offensive to them. But this site is a venue for people to express themselves, and in such a circumstance I think that language needs to be evaluated for its intent. Not by some arbitrary system of rating words as either naughty or not

We have discussed this. Of all the horrors out there; murder, war, racism, terrorism, etc. etc. etc., many people find the use of words far more distasteful. If they were punched in the face, they might see that being called a jackass (the correct name for an animal that exists, so don't get excited) isn't as bad.

Maybe I'm desensitized to the 'vulgarity' of these words, but to me there's no reason to be offended by an f-bomb unless it's used out of hate towards an individual or group. Since my work was of fiction, that is just not the case. That said, Kelly, don't call me a donkey as I am deeply offended by being compared to any hoofed creature on four legs
