Chabbi Ram (A Children Poem) Poem by Rajesh Thankappan

Chabbi Ram (A Children Poem)

Rating: 5.0

There was a man named Chabbi Ram
Whose stomach was large and round,
No alarm could make him run
For he had a stomach of one ton!

Once when a quake reached four Richter
People ran helter-skelter,
But Chabbi hid underneath his bed
In his thatched house, protecting his head.

No damage did befell
And Chabbi congratulated himself,
He dubbed all others villages as cowards
Who did better hide their heads in cupboards!

A few days later an elephant was on the rampage
People fled their home to avoid this savage,
Leaving Chabbi to his lonely self
For who on earth could lend him help!

But some people came back as minutes rolled
To help Chabbi from his unearthly cold, (for he was trembling
in fear)
To rescue him from his plight
And truck him to a safety site.

To their surprise they could not find him at home
Nor could they imagine him gone,
Surely he could not have run
With a stomach of full one ton!

So they called his name aloud
And Chabbi emerged from a large cupboard!
Pale and shaken as a man from hell
But surely everyone was there to help.

Later, when the elephant was shot at (Of course with a
tranquilizer)
And people came back home on recovering their guts,
They nicknamed Chabbi as Mr Chabboard
For his bravery in entering a cupboard.

For it would have surely broken his head
Had it overturned and fallen overhead!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
N.B. Assam, in India, is prone to earthquakes and in certain pockets to elephant menace. In rural Assam, the theater of this poem, houses are predominantly made of bamboo and semi-pucca housing materials, though in recent years, pucca (i.e., houses made of cement, stone, brick etc.,) are fast becoming commonplace.

Quite hilarious..... arouses interest not only in children, but in elders too! Enjoyed the 'feats' of Chabbi Ram especially the lines; But some people came back as minutes rolled To help Chabbi from his unearthly cold, (for he was trembling in fear) To rescue him from his plight And truck him to a safety site............'truck him' tells it all!

Aftab Sir, presently I am based in Karnataka, India by virtue of my job in the Railways. However, I had a long and lovely relationship with Assam and its beautiful people and this I shall always cherish.
