Christopher Marlowe,
the famous playwright and contemporary of William Shakespeare
met a tragic end in 1593.

He was not killed in prison,
but rather in a tavern fight.

Here's what happened:
On May 30,1593,
Marlowe visited a lodging house for drinks with friends.

An argument erupted over the cost,
and Marlowe pulled out a knife.

In self-defense, Ingram Frizer, one of the witnesses,
plunged the dagger into Marlowe's head just above his right eye,
killing him instantly.
Not on purpose, but purely accidental

While some believe it was a bar fight escalated by alcohol,
others suspect a darker motive.

Marlowe had been vocal about his atheistic beliefs,
which was not correct in Elizabethan England.
Queen Elizabeth I herself may have ordered
his assassination to silence him.

Intriguingly, there's even a theory that Marlowe faked his death
and continued writing under a different name
none other than William Shakespeare.

In any case,
his demise remains a fascinating historical mystery.
