Debussy Poem by Daniel Brick

Debussy

Rating: 5.0

While listening to your music
as a young man when it was still
new to me, I imagined we were friends,
sharing our lives of carefree poverty,
able to make do with our musical talents
to play in bars or churches or schools,
as chance would have it, and sometimes
filling in for absent musicians
in the Lamoreaux Orchestra, fully
aware Mallarme and his friends were
in the audience, anxious to hear
more Wagner, as we were to play him,
being still Wagnerites ourselves.
And so we played THE RING excerpts
with passion and verve, and made
the LOHENGRIN Prelude shimmer with
mystic light. And late in the concert,
the TRISTAN Prelude almost reduced us
to tears. Afterwards, we feasted on
tables replete with food and wine,
spread out on the lawn by rich patrons
of the arts. And we were delighted
in our artful lives... But Sunday's
respite over, we returned to our hack
jobs. But already in your mind swirled
the sounds that would transform Music
into something new and wondrous. And
even with that thought, my day dream
closed, and I was alone in my apartment,
playing records in solitude of those
later achievements: Preludes, Images,
Nocturnes and Seascapes and a sublime
opera, celebrating the unexpected love
of a lonely boy and an abandoned girl,
a prince and princess no less, whose
hesitant gestures, rooted in deep desire,
flowered into rapture. Despite the dark
forest in which they were trapped, they
became beacons to each other, and joy
flourished. Your music imparts happiness
to them and us who listen, and, of course,
it is this happiness which lasts forever.

This is a nice tribute to a very complicated musical genius, who may have benefited greatly from a friendship with a youthful and musically talented Daniel Brick. So, would you have also been a composer? What would your instrument(s) have been? Piano too? I like that you chose the format of a dramatic monologue. I am imagining you standing along the side of the stage reciting this piece while the younger Daniel and Debussy go about their way, living the lives of rock stars of their time. Debussy could have used a wingman for sure... Not for his music, but for his forays into love! The transition of the piece into an analysis of his music (from Dramatic Wagner to His own Impressionistic natural style) . Is not only informative, but also beautifully written. I have not seen his opera, but now my interest is peaked (listened to some snippets on YouTube) ...

To put your passion in music into poetic language is amazing. You are a gift to the world. Yes, music: If music be food for the soul, play on! To play in the choir belting your best...is a great spiritual experience. Sing unto the a new song. Something strange happens when the Spirit of God takes over! After that you experience such joy and contentment. You have expressed it here. Thank you!

Daniel! very nice poem! i'm also Wagnerite! I have many poems about him, .and Debussy - is so gentle and fascinating! I also adore Mahler, especially 9-th Symphony!

I must admit, Daniel, that I am uncultured. I 'know' little of the arts; Music, Painting, Opera. Ballet etc.. I have spent most of my life reading and studying the sciences: Anatomy, Geology, Astronomy, Physics etc. Having said all of that, I will tell you that I am not ashamed to cry when I hear a string quartet or even a favorite contemporary song. I envy people of your knowledge and refinement and found your poetical reverie quite lovely.
