Doge Loredano Poem by Tom Billsborough

Doge Loredano

Forever island in your equipoise.
In salmon-pinks and silver you arose
As Venice from a ground of blue to gain
Through many years of prudence
A delicate, precarious balance.

Doge Loredano, you remain
A proud memorial of enduring grace,
And art's frail refuge in the face
Of the true foe your city can't contain,
Once her life-blood and her source of fame
Now the slow scourge of vandalising Time.

equipoise........Tom showing off his vocabulary again! i sure didn't claim to know the definition! e·qui·poise ˈekwəˌpoiz/ noun noun: equipoise 1. balance of forces or interests. this temporary equipoise of power a counterbalance or balancing force. plural noun: equipoises capital flows act as an equipoise to international imbalances in savings verb verb: equipoise; 3rd person present: equipoises; past tense: equipoised; past participle: equipoised; gerund or present participle: equipoising 1. balance or counterbalance (something....' - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - definition of doge: the chief magistrate of Venice or Genoa. Doge Loredano was a the doge of Venice about 500 years ago. a portrait of him from 1501 hangs in London's National Gallery. who knew? ? ? in the portrait i viewed online, he appears to be dressed in salmon-pink and (mostly) silver; i did not see his underwear. he resembles, to a large degree, my PH friend Tom Billsborough! let me guess: the true foe your city, the doge's city, is sea level. right? well, partly! here is what Google had to offer: Sea-level rise isn't the only thing that has Venice's famous canals rising ever-so-slightly every year: The city is also sinking, a new study shows, in contrast to previous studies that suggested the city's subsidence had stabilized. The study's findings also showed that the Italian city is slowly tilting slightly to the east, something scientists had never noticed before. Venice's subsidence was recognized as a major issue decades ago, when scientists realized that pumping groundwater from beneath the city, combined with the ground's compaction from centuries of building, was causing the city to settle. But officials put a stop to the groundwater pumping, and subsequent studies in the 2000s indicated that the subsidence had stopped, said lead author of the new study, Yehuda Bock, a research geodesist with Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, in La Jolla, Calif. ================================================ i hate it when i have to be knowledgeable in order to understand a dang poem! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! oh well, i learned somethin'. not too useful, but what is? ? ? ice cream is on sale at the store? yes! THAT is useful information. bri :)

Just trying to broaden your education, Bri! Yes, he does look like me. In fact the first time I saw it in the National Gallery I thought I was looking in a mirror. Then I realised I wasn't into Salmon pink. As for Ice Cream now you're talking. You know, Bri, as far as I know only Wallace Stevens mentions ice-cream in a poem: Let be be the finale of seem.. The only Emperor is the Emperor of Ice-cream. No wonder I think Wallace is one of the greats. It's about time us Ice Cream fanatics put this right. I could adapt that Tom Jones song My, my my Delilah with Vi! Vi! Vi! Vanilla.. what do you think? I bet you could lick the rest into shape.
