Earth Anthem Poem by Daniel Brick

Earth Anthem

Witness the fervor
of our enduring trust
in the Cosmic Order.
Planets, fire and sleep

riddle our fates.
They are Gaia's actual music
scored for human love or mortal hate.
By natural choice we are enthused.

Once in orbit we must
join the older sky-wanderers
returning along bent paths
to their rings of sleep.

We must unwind a double life
of time on earth and time in space.
Our destiny determines
this sense of flight

through vast silences of night.
Whether we stand rooted to earth,
looking up, or looking back,
from a careening space ship:

Let us praise
our sun-ripened skin, our moon-meshed nerves.

Let us enter
the dark cathedral of this holy earth.

Let us join
the spinning hymn of this sacred globe.

Let us raise
our jeweled hopes for this new age.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is a futurist poem which combines an ecological reverence for the earth (the GAIA theme) and a prophecy of space travel and colonization. I have a poet friend who really liked the four 'Let us... ' anthems at the end but disliked the theme of Space. He said the poem was cluttered and confusing. One other person agreed with him. I did not fight it. I dropped everything except the four anthems. Recently, one of my correspondents, *sunprincess*, asked to see the whole draft. Her response to it was very positive and she encouraged me to publish the whole poem. I was touched by her endorsement and persuaded by her argument. The result is the regeneration of the whole EARTH ANTHEM. Thank you, *sunprincess*! !
BTW *sunprincess* has a remarkable narrative poem called COME TAKE A JOURNEY WITH ME, in which she explores the concept of TIME through a variety of meanings and experiences. You can't go wrong with a poem which involves both Albert Einstein in the Think Tank and Alice in Wonderland, or is that Einstein in Wonderland and Alice in the Think Tank. See for yourself! It's an exhilarating ride!

and I'd like to add: This is a futurist poem which combines an ecological reverence for the earth (the GAIA theme) and a prophecy of space travel and colonization. I have a poet friend who really liked the four 'Let us... ' anthems at the end but disliked the theme of Space. He said the poem was cluttered and confusing. But the response of another poet to it was very positive and she encouraged me to publish the whole poem.

Per scelta naturale siamo entusiasti. for the whole Italian text: next Anthology ebook :)

This is a wonderful poem. Was it inspired by the Gaia book, or spaceship earth? It's kind of funny and quaint in this presentation: the combination of the futurism with the mysticism. I think there could be ways to deal with it even more subtly. Maybe beginning with the earth as a character, and the dreams while in her orbital sleep. How fragile this peace is, and she experiences for the briefest moment, a shortness of breath... the entirety of humanity. What is our contribution? I get that it's an anthem, I couldn't hear the music myself, which is unfortunate.
