Filicide Poem by Parameswaran Nair Damodaran Nair

Filicide

Rating: 5.0

Somewhere from the nook of my dreams
Sometimes rises an angel so cute
She strolls to me and kisses my cheek
Saying "It's all fate, don't grieve my dad".

I hold out my arms to greet and hug her
Alas! I feel, I am hugging a lock of smoke
How cruel was I, with a butcher's will
To get her finished in her mother's womb

Mercilessly I did eliminate from life a 'burden'
I realise I am identified for the punishment
With cureless ailments and endless pains,
Fettered and forfeited, forsaken and forlorn

I confess I am a filicide, I signed the 'quotation'
With these hands of mine now quivering
Like a peepul leaf in endless breeze
Deserving no redressal nor redemption

I repent. I had perished a heaven of love
My little angel had in her heart for me
Deserted dejected and desperate I do repent;
Had not my heart been barren of love for her

Many parents do selective abortion of female fetus as they prefer son for the family. Whatever may be the reason , abortion certainly bears a sense of guilt on the part of the person who do it.

There are many factors to abortion It is both a legal and moral question. Why should one go for abortion? In many cases mothers are forced to do it by a lover/husband /in -laws and in many cases they opt it for convenience. There are also medical factors and factors like social stigma attached for an unwed mothers particularly in countries like India that force a mother to go for abortion.

Abortions are carried out in India either for the sake of avoiding unwanted children or for the sake of the mother's health. If it is for avoidance it would have been better to avoid it resorting to contracepytives

Great poem, and I empathize with you dear poet. Something similar had happened to me long back... When my daughter was born, I could not be there, She died of birth complications, but I live with the burden till today that she felt upset, I was not there to welcome her. I too have written a poem on that, its precise title I can't recall.

Thank you very much dear Pathakji. There are Occassions when we stand perplexed with an open mouth feeling the helplessness of man before destiny that decides everything

Annihilating a life in the womb is an unpardonable crime. We don't have any right to blot out a life. Those parents who do it will be plagued by a sense of grief sooner or later. Those unborn that are thought to be a curse could very well be a boon or a blessing.... who knows! A salient thought expressed in powerful verse.

Thank you Valsa George. When the sense of loss strikes hard we are left to grieve with repentance for our sins not redeemable.
