Four (And A Half) Poems On Nothing Poem by Souren Mondal

Four (And A Half) Poems On Nothing

Rating: 5.0

You think once
sober
You think once
drunk

And you think the third time past the hangover
at nine o'clock in the morning

In between
nothing has happened

(1)

IN VINO VERITAS

(A)

The night of the last Christmas
He lied that he was with nobody

He was with himself
thinking about what lies behind the ultimate truth

Is there any such thing? ?

He thought and thought
and then drank eight shots
of tequila
in seven minutes

The blood and mind
both got corrupted in a few minutes

And he went back to his daydream
of an encounter with a being who had the answers of his most profound questions....

[BY VIRTUE HIS GUIDE WAS A WOMAN]

'Why me? ? ',
she asked.....

(B)

So he wenr for a walk at evening
to meet his friend
THE PROFESSOR

They talked about the being of
nothingness and
the nothingness in the BEING

They concluded that
nothingness' being must be fascinating

And dragged themselves to death
by Alcohol...

(2)

BRAMHAN AND HESITATION

The Saint asked his pupils

WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF LIFE? ?

Most feared the wise SAINT
and remained silent...

But for Sunaina

She said

LIFE, GURUDEV, IS THE LIE BETWEEN TWO TRUTHS - BIRTH

AND DEATH

The SAINT smiled and told her

YOU HESITATED

(3)

THE TRAVELLER AND THE SUPREME BEING

Once upon a time a TRAVELLER
curious about what happens after
death
killed himself to open the portal
of THE OTHER WORLD

There beyond the weeds and seeds of life
the TRAVELLER met the
SUPREME BEING...

are you the ONE?

THE SUPREME BEING NODDED IN AFFIRMATIVE AND GAVE A SMILE

did you make us?

"YES" said the SUPREME BEING

I HAVE MADE YOU AND YOU MADE ME

i made you? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

I MADE YOU AND BY MAKING YOU I MADE MYSELF

(4)

BEING AND MISUNDERSTANDING(S)

So we all have been there

Here in a place
between sense and

nonsense
from where all meanings are formed.

There is a puzzle -

a labyrinth that was created by a FOOL
on the first day of human existence,

Another FOOL copied it down
kept making copies on a million of trees
until he died....

Only one ancient tree survoved

there was written

ALL OUR SOULS ARE LIKE FISHES AND BODY WATER
THIS YOU MUST KNOW AND NOTHING ELSE

....

Centuries,
or maybe a few minutes past when a YOUNG SAINT

curious for finding the universal
transcendental truth
arrived at the PLACE

there he perched and began meditating
under the Ancient tree

For one hundred and seventy years the Young Saint
remained in meditation
chanting

MA FALESHU KADACHINAM
KUN FAYA KUN

(Work, don't bother about results/
Be, and it is)

And on the first day of the 171st year,
A young boy found the skull of the
Young Saint

And upon looking up he saw

THIS YOU MUST KNOW AND NOTHING ELSE....

Live in love and die in love, life is love and love is life. A great poem.

In these scattered thoughts, I find a strong thread tying them all together. Man is left in a world of confusion..... Each thinking soul has been since eons trying to solve the riddle called life. But life and its mystery keep eluding him to a point in which he cries out in utter helplessness....' confusion confounds'! Man's existential angst has been expressed by writers and thinkers in many ways. Finally we go back to that point from where the poem began........ that life is a lie between two truths... Birth and Death! The skull at the end also tells- Death is the next reality and the only reality that a living man has before him! Souren..... only one with a highly philosophic bent of mind can write such a profound poem!

Thank you very much Valsa ma'am.. During my earlier days, I was not sure about a lot of things and they created a confusion in me that troubled me.. As I have grown older now, I have finally realised that the only mantra that we need to follow in life is that of loving everyone with compassion and empathy.. Our lives are meaningful not by whatever material possessions we have got, but how many lives we touched positively during our lifetime.. This is the only thing we should know.. Hate no one, love everyone, including ourselves, and the beautiful planet we have got.. This will do enough for us.. Between life and death, there needs not be shadow, but just love...

This work has so much depth that it deserves many readings. Once again you have dealt with the theme of nothingness with a natural finesse. Though I could never make much of existentialism and reading Jean Paul Sartre was a very bumpy ride but I enjoyed reading this poem. To me, this is not a drunken rant, its a very well thought-out work. I feel these stories are connected to each other n its for reader to figure it out. We all have this question at the end of the day, Why am I here? So I really liked this poem that attempts to find answers.

Thank you Nosheen.. Sarte is too much at times when he writes non-fiction. It troubles a lot.. Being someone without any formal training in philosophy, or much formal education, I find him too troublesome to read. But he always made me question the idea of my existence... Thank you for reading - :)

I have come to find that (especially after 8 shots of tequila) Nothing thoughts grow deep and deep thoughts grow profound. At nine the next morning, I don't care about anything but coffee and aspirin.

I am lucky that I had never had any hangover irrespective of how much I drank.. It feels nice to be sober now.. Almost 8-9 months since my last drink.. Poor liver and depression made me consider this.. Now if I could go cold turkey, I would be a happy man.. Thanks kelly..
