Chopped Off (T: W: On Female Genital Mutilation) Poem by Souren Mondal

Chopped Off (T: W: On Female Genital Mutilation)

Rating: 5.0

They held me down
my mother and that woman
taking off my clothes
on the strange strawy floor

The tin roof was dark
only a little light came through a hole

And then came the pain
as they did something with my
vagina

...Blood flowing like piss
warm and fresh....

my screams were muffled by the dirty cloth
that smelled like faeces

they had stuffed into my small mouth

The blade was not sharp
the cutting not done

So they persuaded again

Pig in a slaughterhouse

A pig of only seven
in
a
slaughterhouse

I could not pee for five days
Without feeling a burn
one that melts the soul

My screams were due

my clit cut off.....

Cutting,
Cutting
Cut....

A pig in a slaughterhouse

A girl with mutilated vagina

It was my body
my vagina

They cut it down
to curb my bad wants

sexual desires

Shhhh! ! !

Don't say those those words
no girl here says that.....

Barbaric practice should be banned, since ages women has been suppressed in the name of religion, society and what not... Hats off for bringing in to light of this age old practice. While reading I felt the goosebumps being a woman I respect other women's right to live with dignity. My compliments Soren..Keep writing and keep sharing.100++++++

Thank you Arzoo.. As a human being with a little conscience, I find myself in extreme pain when I hear, read, or SEE WITH MY OWN EYES, how women are treated in the society.. We cannot justify any of this - this violence, hatred, oppression, and brutality that is carried out against women in the name of Religion, social norms, or whatever... I will raise my voice, and keep raising it until I will go mute.. There is no room for discrimination in a civilised society.. We should then call ourselves barbarians and go back to caves, or change the world.. Equality between the genders in all spheres.. That is the world I dream of..

You have captured the brutality of this custom very well. The plight of a small girl who goes through this is felt strongly by the reader. A powerful write, giving voice to the voiceless. Full marks.

Thank you Nosheen.. We are 'apparently' living in the 21st century, and still we have sheer barbarism, violence, crimes, repression, subjugation of women. If there is anything that makes me feel agonised it is the state of women in present day world.. We need more equality amongst the sexes. These sorts of barbarity and cruelty is absolutely unacceptable.. NOT AT ALL.. Thank you for reading.

Only women can understand the pain of Genital Mutilation, I congratulate you, It is indeed a bold decision to bring this issue and condemn openly. Such courageous act is very much required specially by the kind-hearted poets, it is time to show the mirror to the society which in the name of all big banner do such unethical and inhumane acts.100++++

Thank you Asim.. These kinds of barbarism cannot take place in a civilised society.. This is barbarism.. 'Khatna' is absolutely inhumanic, and against basic human rights.. A big NO to this.. I hope the governments of all the 29 odd countries where this is practised will make it illegal
