Gentleness A Lost Virtue? Poem by John Knight

Gentleness A Lost Virtue?

Rating: 4.4

Gentleness of LOVE
Gentleness of look
Gentleness of touch
Gentleness of word
Gentleness of attitude
Please, please be gentle with me!

Please love me gently
Please regard me gently
Please massage me gently
Please message me gently
Please consider me gently
Please, please be gentle with me!

Agression inLOVE
Agression in look
Agression in touch
Agression in word
Agression in attitude
Please, please don't be agressive with me!

Yesterday attitudes were gentle
Today attitudes are agressive
Yesterday it was LOVE
Today it is LUST
Yesterday was peaceful
Today is turmoil!

Gentleness - where did it go?
Peacefulness - why did it disappear?
Lovliness - how did it die?
Joyfulness - when did it evaporate?
Reason - who who ostracised it?
Freedom -who ended it?

Pride and Prejudice have come
Humility and Helpfulness have gone.
Greed and Grabitall have come
Grace and Generosity have gone
Every man for HIMSELF
Every woman for HERSELF (God forbid!)

Can we ever - turn back the clock?
Can we ever - restore the equilibrium?
Can we ever - return to pastures green?
Can we really - tear down the concrete?
Can we really replace it - with the abstract?
Can we ever return to the 'Age of Gentleness'?

A helpless call to Gentelness and other virtues to come back to this era...Humans of today are really losing Reason and Ethics, so there is nothing left to deserve our so- to -speak 'human' prestige...Thnx for this call and this reminder.

I agree so much, this world has seen so much hate and greed, and mostly due to competitiveness, people were once more accepting, now they are less accepting and it seems that the values of these awful characteristics are getting stronger...10 for caring, for sharing..and for bringing it to light

Thank you so much John for your telling me about this poem.O I remember the bygone days when manners mattered and gentlemen were just that and o yes ladies were just that.Things were slow and relaxing and everyone was your neighbor.Society has gone back to a hurried primitive behavior where # 1 is all that matters.John your poem speaks volumes about the changes in today's society.Beautiful and enlightening

I know gentlemen are few and far between these days, as are many ladies of yesterday. Inventions have changed the method of courtship where letters, walks and long telephone calls have emails, text messages, fast cars and mobiles. Perhaps if we could wipe out drugs there may be some improvement, but people are being bashed up by crazy addicts. I really like the way you write John, asking a question to the reader with a methodical, and yet creative approach with your poem. Thank you for sharing. 10 love Karin
