Giving Birth

(October 2004) .

I am giving birth-
birth to new life.
After the labour of these
last few days
he’s coming, look!
My sweet child.

Beautiful golden,
raw and rare
in a hundred different smells
of pee and blood and sweat!
Mother Earth!
Now!
you call me
to your
seventh core!
O Mother Earth!

This pain is real.
Oh Mother
For once I know
How close
Pain is to life.

And this I wanted
To deny me:
The ecstasy
In this pure agony.

To live,
To live
as one detached
from the trouble
and travail
in humanity;

Removed from the
billow and surge
of stormy seas;

Prim
as a princess in a tower,
safe
from the knowledge
and thrill
of incredible suffering
that all men must go through
who dare
to co-create with God.

But he’s come now
and given birth too
to one mother
who shall
nevermore be afraid
to give birth and
be reborn
anew.
