Glasgow Smile Poem by Quênia Lalita

Glasgow Smile

I still remember
the way those lights and shadows moved
across every big old building
all over that big old city

I still remember
the pain on my right foot, increasing
as I walked away from you
not knowing where I'd end up

I still remember
the regret and the mess I made
and the seagulls and the late night establishments
brightening up our faces

I still remember
all the times I reached out to kiss you
all the times I held your hand in dark pubs
all the times it didn't feel like we were too late

I still remember
the bridge, the hamburgers, the wind
I still remember how you made me feel
in those rainy train rides back to your place

I still remember how hard it was to get on that plane,
to say goodbye, after spending those last few hours together
drinking and laughing as if
we'd never have to live our lives apart from each other again

and I'm still sorry
about such silly, mindless mistakes
such careless moves and meaningless words
that drove you to give up on me

but I'm still here
wanting you, wishing you by my side
keeping the ghosts away
keeping the fire alive, in case you decide to come back

'cause I still think of you as a fortress
a force, a fierceful beauty
a whole millenium fitted in a single body and soul
and oh, how much I still want you to take my body and soul.
