Handout - It Takes Two Poem by Darwin Henry Beuning

Handout - It Takes Two

Rating: 5.0

Here in America
'Land of the Free'
Many are homeless
Living on the streets

Spending their days
Standing on corners
Near malls and busy streets

The ones that do best
Have a dog with them
Standing by their side

A Dog
Their last true friend
Faithful to the end

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Early morning, review poems, 4: 40am,3 April. This came to me after reviewing a poem by David Whalen titled: Grace of God or Fate. I rated it a 10. We have lots of homeless here in Utah. What is sad, even on the coldest days, those, with a dog, will not go to a provided shelter, because the shelter will not accept pets. Result: Death in the Snow. When I see a person with a dog, I try and stop and give a dollar or two.

by it takes two, do you mean a human and a dog both hanging out and accepting a handout, or do you mean a human with a hand out and a human to give a handout to the hand? (a rhetorical question) bri :) thanks for the Poet's Note. i, too, sometimes help out with a handout. my mate often will think the money will go for alcohol or illicit drugs. hey, some 'need' those too.

dogs can offer, not only friendship, but also protection, an ear to speak to (two ears usually) , warmth on a cold night, and..........if things REALLY get bad, meat for a week...or more. i've also seen a dog harnessed to pull a small shopping cart (not very successfully) over a lawn next to our town's library. bri :)

Well stated; brutal reality.

It's easy to see from this writing that you are a person who really cares about his fellow man. (And about man's best friend.) Your compassion has earned you a ten from me.
