If Not For My Father... Poem by Richard Wlodarski

If Not For My Father...

Rating: 5.0

I

If not for my father...
Would I have learned
To catch with my first glove
Teaching me 'bout baseball

If not for my father...
Would I have learned
To throw a perfect spiral
Teaching me about football

If not for my father...
Would I have learned
About early bird and worm
Teaching me about fishing

If not for my father...
Would I have learned
About house and canvas painting
Teaching me practical art

If not for my father...
Would I have learned
To turn the other cheek
Winning adversity

If not for my father...
Would I have learned
About prevalent prejudice
And existing inequality

II

I feel your spirit guiding...
Your eyes...when catching curve balls
Your hands...on the spiral of life
Your ears...when listening attentively
Your nose...when smelling trouble
Your mouth...when tasting victory
Your heart...when sensing all that is good

Fabulous tribute to your father, Richard. I still feel my father's influence also, though he has been gone for many years now.

This is a heart felt tribute to your loving father! Anyone reading these lines would be touched by the amount of sincerity and filial love you have for your dear Dad! Good children are usually born only from good parents. It seems that your father has been your hero and the beacon of light in your life. I too have written a poem on my father.... In Remembrance of My Father! Let our hearts be filled with gratitude for our parents!

This is your gratefulness towards your father whom you are pleased to give credit for so many good things in your life. A very heartfelt tribute. Thanks.

Rajnish, we didn't always get along, but he deserves this heart-felt tribute. Thank you for your support.

Your homage to your father is rooted in concrete deeds. There is nothing fuzzy or vague about his love, because he took the time to be with you and to teach you one-on-one. Not for your Dad the role of the absentee father too busy with work and worry to spend what we call (somewhat guiltily) quality time. From the details of your poem I see the dailiness of your father in your life. I like the chant-like chain of examples at the beginning of your poem. It shows two things: his love and your appreciation.

Another glowing tribute to a great father. I can understand the depth of your feelings. That long-ago generation is no longer with us. But they had values; they had warmth; they had love.

Thank you for thinking that it's a glowing tribute. Totally in agreement with you about that by-gone era. So sad!
