It's A Monster Poem by Kewayne Wadley

It's A Monster

Late at night beneath my bed
A creature growls.
I noticed it's sound after being woken up mid-snore.
I've heard the stories.
Even the ominous warnings, but never
believed them to be true.
I believed it to be more afraid of me, Than I of it.
The monster beneath my bed.
Its eyes were big, its nails were long,
curling round and round, but its fur seemed soft.
Warm. Inviting.
We started at each other for a moment.
Not knowing what to think.
It knew my name. Even the things that I
was afraid of.
Not once did it mention why I wasn't afraid of it.
I began to question how long it's been under there.
The monster beneath my bed.
Was she a monster, yes.
But not one I'd run from.
There are things in life that are much scarier.
Most nights in the middle of my sleep
I'd hear sounds.
But always figured that it was the house settling.
That or a neighbor getting in late from a long day at work.
As sure as the stories and many warnings that I've heard of her.
I am sure that she has heard of me.
Well, humans at least.
But most things that hide in the dark
Aren't exactly what you'd call monster.
Or a beast, hideous and grotesque.
We continued our staring contest for a minute longer.
I yawned. Then I stretched.
I scooted over and invited her to sleep on the other side of my bed.
The bottom of the bed must've been uncomfortable.
Terrible even, if you have back problems.
There are much more scarier things in life. Like bills, taxes, and inflation.
While most people that see you may run and call you a monster.
Before I close my eyes, and when I open them again.
I'll call you friend.
