Kiwi Magic. Poem by Michael Walker

Kiwi Magic.

Rating: 5.0

Black Magic, a 12-metre-class yacht from New Zealand,
won the America's Cup 5-0 from Stars & Stripes USA
in 1995, sailing in the blue-gray waters of San Diego Bay.
Russell Coutts and his crew were first to bring the Cup
to the City of Sails, whose wide-open deep-water harbour
is ideal for yachting regattas all summer long.
Black Magic was an elegant titanium carbon-fibre monohull.

The America's Cup had long been in Europe then San Francisco
when Team New Zealand launched a challenge again this year,
flying Emirates in the light-blue waters of the Great Sound,
Bermuda, to defeat Oracle Team USA 7-1 all the way, sailing
the duel in a fifty-foot wingsail foiling catamaran.
Peter Burling foiledJimmy Spithill's manoeuvres start to finish.
Team NZ's multihull was faster, if less elegant, than Black Magic.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This sonnet is an account of Team New Zealand's two successful challenges for the America's Cup, both against USA in the finals series. In no sense is this a history of the America's Cup from 1995 till May/June,2017. I was not so preoccupied with rhymein the poem and chose to leave out commas to give a sense of speed. Fast action, fast reading.
I listened on radio to the 1995 and 2017 finals then saw them the last few days on You Tube, to get a sense of background atmosphere, test the waters.
Naturally I am proud that New Zealand won both series but I did not want jingoism or excessive boasting to colour the sonnet.

It is a best historical poem on sport having nice depiction. The glorious days of New Zealand has been presented touchingly without jingoism. Many thanks for sharing this.
