Leavenworth Poem by Madathil Rajendran Nair

Leavenworth

Rating: 5.0

A September rendezvous
With Leavenworth
The town that boasts
Of a great Bavarian past

Which celebrates inebriate
On beer of German brew
Brown, black, bubbling
Post-prandial burping

The streets walk as though doped
Golden afternoons
Overlooked by mounts on the north
With puffy hair of clouds

The Northern Cascade mounts
That smell of ancient South Pacific
Of a hundred million years ago
Shade and keep her bright
From raining vagabond clouds

Men and women go in and out
Of shops that sell curios
Sleep-walkers who yearn
To store a holiday in things

While others sit
With profound visage
Sipping wine of age
That is ancient vintage
Till their eyelids fail to rise

Children celebrate their glee
Moving around the town
In a decorated horse carriage
The animal neighs in disregard
Dumps bucketful of dung
Into a bag tied to its hind

Two trees overlook in the breeze
Overburdened with green fruits
No one knows their name
One says weeping willows
The other refutes
Who has time
To remember their next of kin
In a world lost to its moorings

Slow flowed Wenatchee
The anklet of Leavenworth.
Drunken, no one had time
To know her heart-beats
That sunny afternoon
When clouds failed to rain
And men drowned in wine

Filled with beer and drowned in wine the town has its own characteristic and beauty. You captured the spirit so well.

You are the best kind of tourist. One who takes away the essence of a place and meets at the crossroads of its past and possibility and hears the song it sings. Waiting for ears to hear its story beyond the curios and common attractions.

You have an eye for detail....! You make each new place that you visit become familiar to all those who read you....its topography, its specialties, its flora... everything. I can see before me groups of men sipping vintage vine till their eyelids fail to rise, children riding on horse back while the animal dumps dung into buckets tied to its hind and busy men and women, going in and out of shops piling things for a life time! Splendid!

Men and women go in and out Of shops that sell curios Sleep-walkers who yearn To store a holiday in things- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Ha! I do believe you have discovered something that 99.9% of the peoples on this planet have in common- the love of trinkets that commemorate their visits to foreign soils! French people come to America and buy a statue of the Space Needle- -we go to Paris and buy a statue of the Eiffel Tower. It would perhaps promote understanding and good will if the visitors to our beautiful country visited farms and ranches and vineyards and sat down to dinner with the people who lived there as well as Americans visiting the same in countries such as Estonia and Greece and Slovakia and dined and talked long into the night with the people who lived there. .

Sir, A very picturesque narrative, embellished with flowing imagery. The richly colorful painting of a poem, draws a very enchanting painting in the mind of the reader. This is the result of very close curious observation by the poet, which is the characteristic of every poem of yours. Fantastic. Loved reading the poem. One image that captured my heart is Vagabond Clouds, which is the true description of the clouds, by quite unique in its combination. Reminded me of the inimitable rendering by Great Kaalidasa. Congrats. And Thank you for sharing.100+
