My Brother Forever Poem by Bernedita Rosinha Pinto

My Brother Forever

Yesterday, today, tomorrow and forever
you will be my brother
whom I will hold in the depth of my heart
until my last breath ceases;
and though eternity may change lanes
we will still find each other
like how we would find ourselves on the playground
when we would run and play
the game of hide and seek in our childhood.

And though many may be the days and years
that you will be away from me,
your name, your memory will be there with me
every fraction of my life's way;
as whenever I look at those pathways we walked to school,
whenever I think of those books we read together
whenever I think of those friends we gained and lost
whenever I think of those stories we told each other
whenever I recollect of those country songs we heard over the radio
how gloriously it all brings back the childhood we spent with cheer.

I wish my brother had never gone so far away from home
as he was so loving to each one of us in his own ways;
I wish those days of togetherness and laughter had never ended
I wish those future dreams which we saw in each other's eyes
for our children were all accomplished;
but as years turned and made our hair a little more whiter
the crimson sunset of life appeared one last time before my eyes
and I never chose to see it again,
it was the day you left this world
never to embrace anyone of us ever again.

How sadly we wait for you, to feel the strength of your love
but nothing can change the distance that stands between us.
If only was the way to heaven just a few miles away,
how many times would I have not walked that lane to tell you
how much each one of us misses you.
and as this chapter of life closes one book
with tears in my eyes I title it - Brotherhood;
I have stored in memory many episodes
where as a brother and a sister
we ran, we played so often the game of hide and seek
and found each other but now I can find you nowhere;
yet my heart keeps saying - "you were my brother, yesterday,
today, tomorrow and forever".
