Fallen Phoenix

My Wings From His Affair

How could you love me, and then look away?
How could you do this, how could you stray?
Why did you risk the life that we made?
What would you do if I hadn't stayed?

You said it meant nothing, nothing to you
It was a mistake, just something to do
Our perfect life crumbled and then tumbled down
I saw destruction as I looked around

I hit the ground broken unable to walk
The breath knocked out of me unable to talk
You fell down beside me in anger and shame
You said you deserved to take all the blame

The darkness fell over us and together we ached
Stuck in this nightmare only wishing to wake
But the nightmare was real, there was no waking up
It was time to confront this, it was time to stand up

The pain was so strong but we bore it together
And that's when I earned my very first feather
Some days I did stumble, fell back to the floor
When you picked me up I earned one feather more

Determined you fought to understand many things
And although it was painful, I grew both my wings
Through the passage of time we found answers to why
And I unfolded my wings and stared up at the sky

Afraid to test them, afraid of their strength
I trusted in you and I fell from the brink
The fall came so fast and up rushed the floor
But then my wings opened and I started to soar
Those wings that you made me held strong and held true
And that's when I realized that I could forgive you
