Mystery Person 05

Rating: 5.0

This man and a few companions
Escaped from jail,
Or rather, a prison camp in Siberia.
One of the fellows was called Slav.
A young girl later joined them, too.
They trekked 4000 miles to freedom.
Once they saw a couple of Yeti,
Just stood and observed them for an hour.
Had to withstand cold and hunger.
Nearly dead, they arrived in India,
Where they related their tale of sorrow.
Once they were saved by a gift of salami.
Loved ones learning of them were ecstatic.
Later, his book created quite a buzz.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I could have called this a sonnet, since it has 14 lines. I had a professor in a poetry class at a university tell me that any 14-line poem is a sonnet. I used to believe that, but nowadays I have come around to the thinking that for it to be a sonnet, it must follow a certain rhyme pattern, and this has no rhyme at all. Is it even a poem? You decide. I do not claim that it is.I only present it here for those who like to solve mysteries. I was going to save it for the April Contest, but I can't wait that long. This is not a contest. There is no prize except the GLORY of being the first to solve. Do not send me a message with the answer. Just leave your comment under the poem.03 March 2017

This is actually an acrostic poem. If you read the LAST letter of every line you will see the person's name.

Yes, I know this mystery person. I have the book he wrote. Very remarkable achievement! An almost unbelievable feat. I won't spoil it for others by saying his name here.
