Navaratri Devi 1 - Shailaputri Poem by Geeta Radhakrishna Menon

Navaratri Devi 1 - Shailaputri

Rating: 5.0

‘Shailaputri' is the beautiful daughter of the Himalayas,
She is ‘Parvati' the empress seated atop the mountains,
She is ‘Sati Bhavani' meditating on the icy peaks,
She is ‘Hemavati' the charming daughter of Hemavana,
She is the first and foremost Goddess that rules the world,
Shining and resplendent - Mother Goddess of this Universe.

O Mother Goddess ‘Durge'! I meditate on you!
O Devi! ‘Paapanashini' - Destroyer of all sins!
O Jayanti Devi! - Goddess of Victory!
Protect me from every side, every direction and from every angle.
Please weave a protective covering around me to ward off evil,
Please safeguard me from unknown dangers and attacks.

‘Aum Devi Shailaputri'! I am at your service!
I bow down at your beautiful lotus feet!

The fabulous Goddess Durga manifests in nine different forms.
They are; Shailaputri, Brahmachaarini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda,

An Extract from my book ‘Devi Mahatmyam - Mystic power of the radiant Goddess"
In India, special prayers are offered during the annual festival of Navaratri in the months of September - October. ‘Navaratri' means nine days.
Out of the nine days of its observance, the first three days are reserved for Goddess Durga, the next three days for Goddess Lakshmi and the last three days for the Goddess Sarasvati.
Devi showers her blessings to those who chant her name with devotion.

(1) Devotees observe Navaratri Puja for nine days by praying one of the nine forms of Goddess Durga each day out of which Goddess Shailputri is traditionally worshipped on the first day of Navaratri. I am short of words to express the exquisite beauty of the poem. Thanks, Geeta ji.
