One Step Forward- Two Steps Back Poem by Theodora (Theo) Onken

One Step Forward- Two Steps Back

Rating: 5.0

Stone cold silence can be the loudest
When overwhelming worry bounces around
Loudly kicking at your heartstrings hourly
It seems nothing will quell it's sound.

So many hours spent with thoughts that burst
Thudding out reminders of the bad days before
Callously treading over my prayers for a miracle
As it shoves all hope out of the door.

It's a pitiful existence-in this silence i am reeling
Where the reality of failing health punch at ones very core
While it continues to stomp out any prayed for miracle
The trespassing silence knows- i can't take anymore.

I'm at the end of my proverbial rope
As this silence continues to stab at my mind
Taking with it all of my prayers said daily for my loved one
For at the end of the day- no hope do i find.

Not a sparkle- not even a glimmer-in this stone cold silence
For the silence paints the slow downhill fall
My tears begin to fall again like a heavy Texas rain
Knowing that sooner or later-the stone cold silence will have it all.

Theo, the heart of this poem is breaking.... It's not only breaking, it's also breaking apart and breaking down. And it is breaking the readers' hearts. The pain in these lines is hard to bear. I am saddened to know you are going through this grinding process of being relegated to the sidelines where you cannot help, cannot cure, cannot help, and finally cannot reasonably hope but you cannot help but hope a little. An endurance test for the soul while your heart learns how to let go. This is what excellently written poetry can do- -wringing the readers' heart, but more than that, sharing the human condition so that they too may be better prepared for the slow painful loss of a loved one. My prayers are with you and your family. May love surround you, my dear.

MJ, Hello from Texas to Canada! Can't tell you how wonderful it is to see you again! Thank you so much for your encouraging words in re: this particular write; Yes, the realities of the human condition are all too real...and unfortunate- it is an enormous test...of which some do not make it through. Again, wonderful hearing from you once again.
