Personae Poem by Tom Billsborough

Personae

Which is you and which your persona?
Do you really know, acting as you do
In different roles inhabiting new names?
How do we distinguish in your games
The fake image from the true soul?
And more importantly, how do you?
Is the mask a measure of immaturity
Or psychopath's measured response
To one of excessive faith
Who soon will fall into his pit of iniquity.
Or are you but an actor who inherits
Facets of his roles, a gesture or a turn of phrase
That merits his remembrance
And so becomes a composite by chance
Without insidious intent?

I have delt with the same question in my My own walls in a distinction to K.Cavafis walls. Here in a succinct way the poet made clear a point of feeling the theme.Kudos!

I like the idea of the counterfeit vs. the real....and long term theme in the Elizabethan literature that has always fascinated me. I wrote a similar (yet very different) poem today (not posted) . Who is to say what is real vs not in a personna?

I shall look out for your poem, Pam. As I said to Robert, mine's just a sketch. It's a very deep subject and fascinating too.
