Police Commissioner Poem by Juan Olivarez

Police Commissioner

Rating: 5.0

I used to carry, a badge and a gun,
It was impressive, but not at all fun.
I was Police Commissioner, my cops called me 'McMillan.'
But nobody could see just how I was feeling.
It just wasn't a job, for a laid back guy,
Who loved to smell flowers and gaze at the sky.
Then one Saturday night it all came undone,
I threw in the towel, and said' I ain't the one.'
We had a call to a barroom fight,
Some idiot had a gun and was shooting out lights.
I was in the front seat, second car to arrive,
Cause officer Ricky, wouldn't let me drive.
Well it had been raining, all day and all night,
As we pulled into the parking lot, there was nary a light.
And there was no pavement, just wet soggy ground,
With a million mud puddles, popping up all around.
So I jumped out of the cruiser, into the rain,
Ready for anything, I'm not one to complain.
But when my shoes hit the water, I started to slip,
And off I went on my wet one way trip.
My badge went one way, and my gun went another,
I was muddy and wet, a real ugly mother.
But I picked myself up, and ran down the guy,
Then I put him in cuffs, and tried to towel dry.
The barmaids were staring, and I really could tell,
That they wanted to laugh, man I looked LIKE HELL.
Then officer Ricky said, 'we're done here lets go,
Commissioner McMillan you put on some show.
I said 'Ricky, That is the last show, you're getting for free,
I'm going to write poetry, this isn't for me.'

I kept my badge and gun, to this day my badge is on a portrait of John Wayne in my living room, that was painted by Boris's Contreras dad. My 357 magnum is old but still works fine.

A big applause for this one Juan; especially to learn something so special about someone I've come to admire as a poet/writer, and now even more so as a human being. You're a real class act amigo; thanks for sharing a bit of yourself with all of us. By the way, glad to hear ya put that badge next to the Duke!

Excellent write! A very engaging story poem that's complete with rhyme and rhythm as well as an amusing theme. You do write so well and glad you hang the badge & gun and took on the pen!
