One goes to temple in search of peace
Other goes because he is at peace
Third is there to wash his laundry!
And God said:
I have created a song for each of you
Now you have to sing it all alone
Others are there to join in chorus.
And the Devil said:
Fear me! The perpetual fiend
Ictus malicious
Pernicious to your song.
could wash his laundry POSSIBLY be symbolic***? the thought just occurred to me that you REALLY weren't giving me a picture of someone washing underwear amidst worshipers. i might do it, but........... i'm different from many people. do temples have coin-operated machines? ok, i found it using Google: Search Results To talk to other people or in front of other people about personal things that should be kept private. You can also say “wash your dirty linen in public” and in America they use “air your dirty laundry/linen in public”. But I WAS thinking symbolic 'along the lines of' [NOT laundry lines] telling God of their 'sins' and asking for forgiveness. they do that [or did] in confession in Roman Catholic churches, but a priest was/is the representative of God then. Thanks for sharing some of your 'random thoughts'! to MyPoemList and, as an offered poem, to my/our September 2017 showcase. bri :)
One sign of mental and emotional (perhaps spiritual?) health is a sense of humor because humor puts things in perspective so we're not always thinking in egoistic terms. I've already commented on this poem (in a self-centered response) but tonight I saw the humor in the opening and wanted to acknowledge it. The three motives to go to temple are cleverly arranged so that we cannot avoid smiling (the Buddha's perpetual half smile, even in suffering) at the third line. That's the key challenge - to see liberation in terms of ordinary, everyday life. And it IS a challenge. I'm still stumbling along
I love the GITA I really need to re-read it again. I like the Four Paths to God that are presented as equally valid. Krishna represents the theistic path like Jesus or Allah in the West. but the Path of Knowledge (Jnana Yoga) is non-theistic, a-theistic. But you say you're an atheist in America and people are shocked. They refuse to listen to your explanation! They need to read the Gita which is so holistic. (Your references are inspiring me to philosophize instead of poeticizing!)
All of us have our own unique and private reasons to visit places of worship though the prime aim is one of worship and showing veneration to a super power! Enjoyed!
Nice thoughts presented in a lovely style, we all have a way that suits to us and all the ways lead to God.....10
