Sighs And Groans
O do not use me
After my sins! look not on my dessert,
But on your glory! Then you will reform
And not refuse me: for you only art
The mighty God, but I a silly worm;
O do not bruise me!
O do not urge me!
For what account can your ill steward make?
I have abused your stock, destroyed your woods,
Sucked all your storehouses: my head did ache,
Till it found out how to consume your goods:
O do not scourge me!
O do not blind me!
I have deserved that an Egyptian night
Should thicken all my powers; because my lust
Has still sewed fig-leaves to exclude your light:
But I am frailty, and already dust;
O do not grind me!
O do not fill me
With the turned vial of your bitter wrath!
For you have other vessels full of blood,
A part whereof my Savior emptied hath,
Even unto death: since he died for my good,
O do not kill me!
But O reprieve me!
For you have life and death at your command;
You are both Judge and Savior, feast and rod,
Cordial and Corrosive: put not your hand
Into the bitter box; but O my God,
My God, relieve me!

Here is the Bengali Version: দীর্ঘশ্বাস ও আর্তনাদসমূহ ।। জর্জ হার্বাট . সমূহ পাপাচারের পর আমাকে আর টেনো না হে, তাকাইও না এ মরুশূন্যতায়. বরং লক্ষ্য করো তোমার গরিমা! তখন তুমিই পুনর্গঠন করবে আর অস্বীকার করবে না আমাকে: কেননা একমাত্র তুমিই পরাক্রমশালী ঈশ্বর, অথচ নগণ্য এক কীট আমি; আমায় চূর্ণ কোরো না হে! আমায় তাড়া দিও না হে! কেননা তোমার এক অপুষ্ট গোমস্তা কী এমন সুফল আনতে পারে? অপব্যবহার করেছি তোমার মজুদসম্পদ, ধ্বংস করেছি বনভূমি, তোমার শস্যগোলা চেটেপুটে খেয়েছি: মাথা ব্যথা করছিলো আমার, তবুও তোমার পণ্যরাশি গ্রাস করার উপায় খুঁজেছি: কশাঘাত কোরো না হে আমাকে! আমাকে অন্ধ করে দিও না হে! আমার প্রাপ্য ছিলো এই যে, মিশরীয় এক রজনীর উচিত আমার ক্ষমতাসমূহকে পুষ্ট করা; কারণ আমার লালসা তোমার দ্যুতিকে অগ্রাহ্য করতে এখন অব্দি সেলাই করেছে ডুমুর পাতা: অথচ ভঙ্গুর আমি, আর এরই মধ্যে মিশে গেছি ধুলায়; আমায় চূর্ণবিচূর্ণ কোরো না হে! আমায় পূর্ণ কোরো না হে তোমার তিক্ত ক্রোধের ভরা বোতল নিংড়ে ঢেলে! কেননা রক্তভরা পিপাও রয়েছে তোমার হাতে, যার একটা অংশ আমার ত্রাতা খরচ করে ফেলেছে, এমনকি মৃত্যু-অব্দি: যদিও মরেছে আমার মঙ্গলার্থে, আমাকে মৃত্যু দিও না হে! বরং আমাকে দাও হে অবকাশ কেননা জীবন ও মৃত্যু আছে তোমারই নির্দেশাধীন; বিচারক ও ত্রাতা দুটোই তুমি, টোপ ও বড়শী, স্নেহপরবশ ও ধ্বংসকারী: রেখো না তোমার হাত তিক্ততাভরা বাক্সে, বরং হে ঈশ্বর আমার, আমার মালিক, পরিত্রাণ দাও আমাকে! . বাঙলায়ন: রহমান হেনরী
