Something Told The Wild Geese - Poem by Rachel Field

Something told the wild geese
It was time to go.
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered,-'Snow.'

Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster-glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned,-'Frost.'

All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice,
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.

Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly,
Summer sun was on their wings,
Winter in their cry.

I learned this poem when I was in 5th grade, and it stuck with me. It was one of my late husband's favorite poems. We often vacationed on Topsail Island, a barrier island just of the NC coast. This was where he requested his ashed to be scattered after his death. Needless to say, we complied with his request. (Report) Reply

Yes time to fly even when the leaves are still green. Very vivid and truly engaging poem -loved the arrangement and the last words that rhymed well in each stanza. Excellent! 10++++++ (Report) Reply
